'Calico' Jack Rackham

Jack Rackham was called 'Calico Jack' because of the brightly colored clothes that he wore made of calico, which is a type of cotton.

Jack was also famous for having two female pirates on his ship, Anne Bonny, and Mary Read. He met Anne Bonny in the Bahamas, where she was living with a sailor that she'd run off with. Things were not going too well with them, and so she left the man to join up with Jack on his ship, officially becoming a pirate. Calico Jack met Mary when he captured the ship that she was sailing on. Mary had been sailing as a man, named Mark. Jack was impressed with Mark's fighting skills and made him join his crew. Anne was also impressed with Mark, and it was because of her interest in 'him' that Mark eventually told them that 'he' was really a woman named Mary!

Unfortunately, Jack came to a bad end when he was captured and found guilty of piracy. He was hanged in Jamaica in the year 1720.
